Amazonite, also known as Amazon Jade or Amazon Stone, is a captivating blue-green variety of Microcline Feldspar. Its hues range from verdigris green to soft turquoise, often interlaced with white, yellow, or grey veining. Polished Amazonite reveals a pearly iridescence and a marble-like texture, sometimes displaying a Schiller effect—a subtle shimmer that dances across its surface.

Once thought to derive its colour from copper, Amazonite’s distinctive tone is now attributed to trace amounts of lead and water. It forms in short prismatic crystals or massive tabular structures and is typically cut into cabochons for jewelry due to its softness and tendency to fracture. Care should be taken when storing or wearing Amazonite alongside harder minerals.

In ancient Egypt, it was carved into tablets for the Book of the Dead and found among the treasures of King Tutankhamen, including a scarab ring and possibly his famous gold mask. It was believed to be the third stone in the breastplate of the Jewish High Priest, engraved with the name of the tribe of Levi.

In pre-Columbian South and Central America, Amazonite adorned the shields of the legendary Amazonians—female warriors said to use the stone medicinally to heal wounds and illnesses. The conquistadors prized it for its beauty and spiritual potency, carving it into cult objects and amulets.
