Garnet’s legacy spans continents and cultures. It was revered by Hindu and Buddhist practitioners as a stone of enlightenment, worn by Native American, Aztec, Mayan, and African tribal cultures for protection and strength. In ancient medicine, Garnet was prescribed for blood ailments under the principle “like cures like.” Asian tribes even used Garnet bullets, believing they caused greater harm due to the stone’s energetic potency.

The name Garnet comes from the Latin granatus, meaning “seed,” in reference to its resemblance to pomegranate seeds. It was first recorded in 325 B.C. by Theophrastus and later by Pliny the Elder in 77 A.D. Garnet belongs to a silicate group of minerals with six subtypes: Almandine, Pyrope, Spessartine, Andradite, Grossular, and Uvaroite.
